School-to-prison pipeline becomes the focus for Durham Public Schools. In a recent article by the NewsObserve.com, newly sworn in Durham Public Schools Superintendent vowed to address racism in education by lowering suspensions and dropout rates to improve achievement while raising standards. The Durham Public Schools Superintendent stated, “We have to make sure we have schools and curriculum that engages in their learning so that they can have the hope of doing something better than they are doing today,” he continued. “Only that will prevent them from choosing other paths.”
While the goals of Durham Public Schools Superintendent L’Homme are commendable and politically correct, we have heard those promises before from other well-meaning individuals. The results are the same for those superintendents. Those results are disastrous and normally lead to an expedited exit for the superintendent because they refuse to eliminate the racism in education by eliminating racism in the classroom.
The school-to-prison pipeline begins in the classroom. In the classroom, teachers and students come to the classroom with different racial expectations, which ultimately results in a clash between the teacher and the student. The teachers’ inability and refusal to accept the student’s racial differences is the source for the racism.
The racism continues with an unwarranted consequence for the student. When the students realize that they have no hope with the expression of individual racial behaviors they choose not to attend school. As a high school dropout, they are more likely to commit crimes so that they can survive.
Durham Public Schools Superintendent L’Homme, if you mean what you say, and want to continue as a man of your word, then we need for you to develop and implement a plan that eliminates racism in education by eliminating racism in the classroom.
