The Federal Bureau of Investigators reports that there are some 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and prison gangs with about 1.4 million members who are criminally active in the U.S. today.

Offsetting this challenge has bought to the forefront the implementation of anti-gang programs. The types of anti-gang programs are numerous. While some programs have success, the sustainability rate is minimum. An anti-gang program might have some short term impact but the human capital needed for a gang continues to exist.

Each person that is in a gang is the product of our education system too. While some anti-gang programs target our youth, many programs provide students with information regarding gangs in a hope that the children will make an alternative decision.

Children who are not having success in the classroom are likely candidates for inception into a gang. Many of our Black students who fall victim to classroom racism become candidates for inception into a gang.

Instead of spending billions of dollars continuing to fund anti-gang programs that have limited sustainability, it is time to invest in teaching teachers to accept both the racial and economic differences that students bring to the classroom. In this way students will have advanced success in the classroom and therefore decrease the likelihood that the will choose to be in a gang.
